SAM Rowlands, MS for North Wales, is supporting Rishi Sunak in his bid to be the next Prime Minister of the UK.

Mr Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, along with Liz Truss, Foreign Secretary, are the two candidates vying to become the next leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK.

The election, which followed Boris Johnson's resignation as party leader on July 7, began on July 12, with the results expected by September 5.

Mr Sunak and Mrs Truss are the two remaining candidates in contention after eight were initially confirmed, with the other six having been eliminated during the five previous rounds of voting.

In the last round of voting among Conservative MPs, Mr Sunak won 137 votes and Mrs Truss 113, while Penny Mordaunt was eliminated with 105.

Mr Rowlands, Welsh Conservative member of the Senedd and shadow minister for local government, said: “I was lucky enough to spend time with Rishi when he paid a visit to North Wales on the campaign trail late last year, and more recently in Mid-Wales.

“He has a clear plan to restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite our great country which is desperately needed at this time.

“Rishi also used to be a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government, and as a former councillor, I know he understands the problems facing our local authorities.

“He has my full support as I believe he is the only candidate who can tackle inflation, grip the cost of living challenge, and beat Labour in the next election.”
