A Caernarfon-based social enterprise have begun construction of a new multi-purpose workspace, which will be available for public hire.

Sied Werdd will be a multi-purporse workspace, built to the rear of the existing Warws Werdd, and hopes to expand on their work in reusing and repairing goods.

Established in 2004, the Warws Werdd is part of the Antur Waunfawr family of businesses.

The warehouse sells second hand furniture, appliances, clothes and is based at the Cibyn Industrial Estate, Caernarfon.

Antur Waunfawr was established in 1984, and it offers training and work opportunities to adults with learning disabilities.

Partners have expressed their wish that Sied Werdd will boost the local area’s “circular economy.”

A statement issued jointly by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government has defined a circular economy as “keeping resources in use as long as possible, extracting maximum value from them, minimizing waste and promoting resource efficiency.”

The Sied Werdd’s building will compromise of a workspace focusing on furniture repair and the processing of clothes donated at various clothes banks.

The 156sq ft building will also include a makerspace, a co-operative space in which people can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas and equipment such as a 3D Printer, a Laser Cutter, a Heat Press and a Vinyl Cutter.

There will also be multi-use spaces available for public hire.

An Antur Waunfawr spokesperson said: “Environmental sustainability is at the heart of Antur Waunfawr’s work.

“We have three green businesses, all of which are committed to increasing the reusing, the recycling, and the repairing of goods.

“We have Antur Shredding that provides a confidential shredding service for businesses and individuals in North Wales.

“Warws Werdd sells second hand furniture, appliances, clothes, and other items, and Beics Antur is a bike hire and repair shop promoting sustainable travel.

“Also, our on-site garden in Waunfawr offers a sustainable way of life, growing our own produce.

“And we now hope that Sied Werdd will also contribute to our work of boosting the local area’s circular economy.

“Whilst our Caergylchu project focuses on recycling, we hope that Sied Werdd will move more in the direction of reusing and repurposing goods. Giving goods more than one life, as it were.

“The addition of Sied Werd will mean more floorspace in our public shop, Warws Werdd, and will mean expanding the employment and training opportunities we can offer to individuals with learning disabilities.”

The project is in partnership with Gwynedd Council and is funded by the Welsh Government's Circular Economy Fund, with work to be carried out by OBR Construction.

Councillor Dewi Wyn Jones was elected to represent the Peblig ward on Gwynedd Council in May 2022 and was present at the breaking of the ground ceremony.

He said: “As the cost of living crisis depens, the service that Warws Werdd offers will be more crucial than ever, and the reusing, repurposing and repairing work that will be done in the new Sied Werdd will help the people the town to reduce our carbon footprint.

“Antur Waunfawr will celebrate its fortieth birthday in a few years’ time, and in two years it will also be twenty years since the Warws Werdd was established.

“The town of Caernarfon has a very special relationship with Antur Waunfawr, and I hope that the relationship will develop further with the opening of Beics Antur in the town centre, and this exciting development on the Cibyn Industrial Estate.”
