A MAN from a village in Conwy has received a restraining order and suspended sentence after he was found guilty of controlling or coercive behaviour towards his partner at the time.

Elton Smith, 46, of Llewelyn Street, Penmachno, was accused of repeatedly engaging in such behaviour between August 10 and November 28, 2021.

He was found guilty at Caernarfon Magistrates’ Court on July 8, having pleaded not guilty on May 12.

The court had heard how Mr Smith used violence towards Ione Collins on more than two occasions during this period.

He had also attempted to isolate her from her male and female friends.

He also told Collins that, if she ended their relationship, he would take his life.

Mr Smith received the following order, effective until July 11, 2027:

• He must not contact Collins by any means whatsoever.

• He must not go within 100m of a specified Bangor address.

• He must not mention or refer to Collins directly on any social media platform.

He was also handed a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

This was suspended due to Mr Smith being in employment and willing to work with probation and professional services, and his limited previous convictions.

But a 26-week sentence was imposed due to the seriousness of the offence, the effect on Collins, and the lack of accountability.

He must also complete a maximum of 15 days’ rehabilitation activity.

The court also ordered Mr Smith to pay £300 in compensation, £400 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service, and a £128 victim surcharge.

This totalled £828, to be paid in monthly, £100 instalments from August 9.
