A WOMAN from an Anglesey village has raised in the region of £2,000 by having her head shaved for charity in a bid to help those suffering in Ukraine.

Deborah Varney, from Benllech, took on the challenge at The Shed café in the village on Tuesday, May 10, with all proceeds going to British-Ukrainian Aid.

British-Ukrainian Aid is a charity supporting people suffering from the crisis in Ukraine by aligning UK and Ukrainian efforts.

She was joined by Mitch McGregor, a chef at The Shed, and the café owner Stuart Briggs’ son, Kane.

Deborah said: “I feel strangely liberated, actually. Losing my hair is nothing (compared) to the suffering of the Ukrainian people.

“Any qualms re a skinned head have gone out of the window, as we will have made approximately £2,000 by the weekend - all for British-Ukrainian Aid!

“I also want to say a massive thanks to all of the lovely Benllech residents who donated and from further afield, and to Stuart, Kane and Mitch at The Shed for hosting this, and for their own contributions.”

Deborah she was inspired to do this particular challenge after seeing some harrowing footage from Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia on February 24, which particularly resonated with her.

She told the Chronicle last month: “I first thought of this idea for a fundraiser when watching the footage of a poor woman hospitalised in Ukraine. She had had her head shaved because of horrific shelling injuries.

“I thought: ‘I want to raise a significant amount of money for Ukraine’. This footage inspired the head shave for Ukraine.

“As a woman, I know how important most other women find their hair to be. Like most people, I watch the news daily in horror.”

A GoFundMe page to support Deborah’s efforts has currently raised £1,942, far surpassing the target set of £300.
