A FOOTBALL club in an Anglesey village fell at the final hurdle in its attempt to go an entire league campaign without defeat, but still eased to a memorable promotion nonetheless.

Bodedern Athletic FC finished top of Welsh fourth-tier North Wales Coast West Premier Division by five points, having won 26 of 28 league games, and drawing and losing one each of the other two.

Sadly, the defeat came on the final day (Saturday, May 7) as the team suffered a 3-1 loss at runners-up Bangor 1876.

But this took precious little gloss off an unforgettable campaign which saw 125 goals scored, as well as the team being named the best-performing non-league UK team in February, too.

Bodedern wrote on its Facebook page after the Bangor defeat: “Gutted to lose the unbeaten league campaign, but so proud of the lads.

“A pretty even first half, that ended with a sending off for the Green Army; last man Declan Jones accidentally tripping the Bangor striker, but the referee had no choice.

“Bangor took full advantage in the second half but the champions battled until the end - well done, lads!”

This season also represented a dramatic change in fortunes for Bodedern after the club was refused a Tier Three Certificate due to its pitch in July 2020, causing them to be demoted to the fourth tier.

It’s not finished yet for Bodedern this term, either, with a League Cup tie against Pwllheli on Friday, May 13, while the club is also still competing in the NWCFA Intermediate Cup.

Bodedern isn’t the only Anglesey club celebrating, either, after CPD Llanerchymedd FC was crowned North Wales Coast West Division One Champions last Wednesday (May 4).
