THE MP for Ynys Môn, Virginia Crosbie, has issued a statement amid talk that the site of the former Wylfa station on Anglesey is to be chosen to have a new nuclear plant built on it.

Wylfa Newydd was a proposed project to construct a 2,700 station with two ABWR reactors in Anglesey.

The site is empty, but has being earmarked by the UK Government as a potential site for nuclear power expansion in Britain.

It was recently reported that Anglesey could host the first of several new nuclear power stations across the UK.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, who visited the island in January, is due to make an announcement on the subject later this week.

Mrs Crosbie said: “I’m not one to count my chickens but the mood music around a new nuclear power station at Wylfa remains very positive today.

“I am certainly looking forward to the Prime Minister’s announcement this week.

“Until then, I am still ringing telephones and banging on doors making sure that this golden opportunity for our island is landed and the case for nuclear power is made.

“I will keep pushing through my work as the chair of the Nuclear Delivery Group and through the contacts I have made with nuclear players like Westinghouse and Bechtel, both of whom have already been to the island to visit with me.

“The greenlight would mean jobs and investment for our island and a secure future for our young people right here where they were born.

“When I was elected, I said these were my priorities after decades of underinvestment on Ynys Môn and I would be delighted to see it happen.

“But more important than that, the UK needs energy security and clean energy in the decades to come.

“The Energy Isle can help deliver it.”
