THE MP for Ynys Môn, Virginia Crosbie, has welcomed the UK Government funding a feasibility study to look at basing a hydrogen energy storage technology prototype in Holyhead.

The Hydrilyte Refueller Prototype project has been awarded £150,000 to look at how to safely store and transport hydrogen to power heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

The prototype will demonstrate the ability to store hydrogen at a hydrogen hub, transport it using standard fuel tankers and release the hydrogen into a hydrogen refuelling system for use by HGVs.

If the first phase feasibility study is successful, a phase two prototype will be built between 2022 and 2024 at the £4.8million Holyhead Hydrogen Hub that Mrs Crosbie helped secure for the island.

While refuelling vehicles with hydrogen is simple, getting the hydrogen to the service stations is proving to be a problem and this project is addressing that.

Mrs Crosbie said: “I am really pleased this feasibility study could develop into Anglesey getting a further energy arrow to its bow at the exciting hydrogen hub development I helped secure.

“We need to find green energy solutions and I am delighted Ynys Môn is again at the forefront of the UK Government’s thinking.

“What this could mean is yet more investment and jobs right here on our island.

“It cements Anglesey’s reputation as the Energy Isle too and it meets my election commitment to do all I can to bring jobs and investment here.

“It also shows yet again the UK Government has recognised Anglesey has suffered from decades of underinvestment and it is committed to levelling up our communities.

“This is really welcome news but I will not stop until even more jobs and investment come our way.”

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) awarded the money to the Hydrilyte Refueller Prototype project through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) Longer Duration Energy Storage Demonstration programme.

The consortium undertaking the work includes:

• Corre Energy (Prime contractor and project administration)

• Carbon280 (HydrilyteTM Technology developer)

• Worley (EPCM)

• Element 2 (Hydrogen Refueller)

• Menter Môn (Holyhead Hydrogen Hub proposed site for the refueller prototype)

• Energy Reform (Energy systems modelling)
