A FOOTBALL club based in an Anglesey village has become the best-performing non-league team in the UK after recording an 18th win in as many league games last weekend.

Bodedern Athletic FC, who lead the Welsh fourth-tier North Wales Coast West Premier Division by 10 points with a 100 per cent record, overtook Cornwall side Falmouth Town as leader of the Global League Table published by the Non-League Matters (NLM) website.

This followed Falmouth Town’s 3-2 home defeat to St Blazey, ending a run of 20 straight wins, while Bodedern kept their perfect record intact with a 6-0 thrashing against Glantraeth on Saturday (February 12).

NLM updates the list of the 250 best-performing non-league clubs on a weekly basis.

As well as chalking up 18 league wins out of 18, Bodedern have also scored an impressive 82 goals in that time, conceding just 11 in the process.

Notable wins this term have included a 12-0 victory against Pentraeth, and 9-0 and 8-0 home wins versus Gaerwen and Llanrug United respectively.

It comes after the club was refused a Tier Three Certificate due to its pitch in July 2020, causing them to be demoted to the fourth tier.

Manager Ricky Williams, who has led the club across numerous spells in the last 15 years, said: “I was expecting to be up there challenging; we built a good squad, and I knew we had the potential to have a good season, but I don’t think I imagined we’d go 18 out of 18.

“I’d say the toughest games we’ve had were beating Penrhyndeudraeth 2-1 at home when we had a few players missing, and beating Bangor 1876 3-2; obviously, with them being a big, massive club, that was a good win.

“The other highlight I’d say was beating Berriew in the FA trophy when we were 3-2 down to win 5-3; I’d say they were our three biggest performances.

“We found a few months back that we were about fourth or fifth (in the NLM standings) and then, and then Dave Jones from Grassroots North Wales picked it up on Saturday night that we were top.

“I was shocked - I didn’t think that the little old village of Bodedern would be the best-performing non-league side in the whole of the UK.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but a lot of thanks need to go to our committee and the volunteers that help on matchdays as well.

“It’s just one big team; everyone chips in. We’re just one small village, so we haven’t got that many volunteers, but the ones we have are all helpful and hard-working.”

Bodedern Athletic will look to record their 19th successive league win when they visit Penrhyndeudraeth on Saturday, February 19.
