THE energy minister, Greg Hands, will visit Wylfa Newydd with Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie after she invited him to the island.

Mrs Crosbie told Mr Hands in the House of Commons that the site was “the best potential nuclear site in the UK”.

She then asked: “Will the minister accept my invitation to visit Wylfa Newydd to see at first-hand why the Prime Minister himself is a fervent supporter?”

In reply, the minister said: “I absolutely accept that invitation. There is no more passionate advocate of new nuclear in this house than my honourable friend.

“Nuclear is going to be a vital part of our future.

“The UN Economic Commission for Europe recently said that international climate objectives would not be met if nuclear power were excluded, so it is a key part of our net-zero ambitions.”

Speaking afterwards, Mrs Crosbie added: “I am delighted that the minister with responsibility for low carbon energy is coming to see first-hand the amazing opportunity for new nuclear energy that is Wylfa Newydd.

“This is a positive move and it again shows the commitment of the UK Government to nuclear investment.

“We need nuclear if we are to meet our net zero ambitions and I want some of that capacity here on Anglesey.

“We have some way to go before we can get Wylfa Newydd back on track but I will do all I can to make it happen.

“This visit is part of that campaign and I will be lining up a packed schedule for the minister during his visit.”
