Glitz and plenty of glamour were on show on Saturday night in Rhyl with a rousing retelling of a fairytale classic.

“It’s panto time again”, was the opening song of this year's Rhyl Pavillion production of Cinderella.

And if there was any doubt over how much audiences had missed their festive fix of theatre after nearly two years of Covid restrictions, these were quickly dispelled.

Lovelorn Buttons, played by the wonderful Andrew Agnew, got proceedings underway in his role as star and director, saying it was time to 'get back to business' .

The former Balamory star was joined by Coronations Street and Emmerdale actress Hayley Tamaddon as the fantastically upbeat Fairy Godmother.

Cinderella played by the beautiful Bethan Jacks shone together with her Prince Charming played by the debonair Josh Belward, complete with neighing horse moves.

Dedicated servant Dandini (Mark Paterson) was a particular favourite of this reviewer, thanks largely to his boundless Mancunion swagger and on-point parody of Pulp’s Common People.

Cinderella’s father, South Walian actor Gwynfryn West, with his nods to Tom Jones, was well received but stealing the show were the larger than life ugly sisters played by Jamie Morris as Melody (pronounced M' Lady) and Harmony Tarot Joseph.

Their acerbic wit was precision targeted at Cinders to the horror of young audience members, their near to the knuckle remarks were reserved for adult members of the audience having them in stitches.

Hats off to the costume makers whose creations became a dazzling feature of scenes starring this most dastardly of duos.

Cinderella also boasted some sumptuous set design and a sensational soundtrack with fantastic renditions of songs by Ed Sheeran and The Weekend.

Its references to many things we had learned of during the past two years: social distancing, Jackie Weaver, Squid Game, I'm A Celebrity... plus speeches involving Peppa Pig World, highlighted the show's sharp and topical script.

Panto's back, oh yes it is!And not to be missed.

Cinderella is at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre until Friday December 31. For tickets visit www.rhylpavilion.co.uk or call the Box Office on 01745 33 00 00.
