Anglesey MS, Rhun ap Iorwerth, visited the site of a brand new £6.3m Sport Science training facility at Coleg Menai in Llangefni.

Funded through the Welsh Government's 21st Century Schools and Colleges programme, the multi-million pound project includes a brand new sports hall, large gym, changing facilities, 7 Sport Science classrooms, Sports laboratories, staff rooms and equipment storage.

Rhun ap Iorwerth MS welcomed the development, hailing it a big boost for future learners.

"The new Sport Centre is a very impressive addition to the excellent further education provision already on offer in Llangefni," he said.

"This investment will make sure that our young people have a state-of-the-art learning environment to support their education here on Anglesey.

"This will, ultimately, help put them in a strong position to embark on successful careers in Sport and related sectors.

"I congratulate Grŵp Llandrillo Menai on continuously investing to improve facilities and opportunities at their campus in Llangefni.

"I very much look forward to visiting the new Centre when it opens."

Aled Jones-Griffith, Coleg Menai & Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Principal said: “The Sport Centre is another big step towards creating a regionally important education & training hub at Llangefni.

"It will bring the Grŵp’s investment at this campus to well over £40m over the last 10 years.

“The new facility will include cutting-edge technology and equipment for monitoring sporting performance and excellence.

"It really will be an unbeatable facility for students who enroll on our highly regarded Sports & Public Services programme.

"We are grateful to Rhun ap Iorwerth MS for taking time out from his busy schedule to meet with us to learn more about this exciting development.

"We are also extremely fortunate to have secured support from the Welsh Government to help fund this project."

Work recently started on site following a major contract award to north Wales-based READ Construction this summer. The new Centre is expected to be occupied and open for teaching by the start of 2023.

READ Construction Director, Alex Read said: “We are thrilled to be working with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai on this prestigious scheme, which will provide a 21stCentury learning environment and benefit students for many years to come.

"Throughout the construction, we are committed to adding value for current learners, through the provision of work placements and site visits to get hands on experience of the construction industry.”
