THE MP for Ynys Môn, Virginia Crosbie, has announced December’s ‘Hidden Hero’ as Jean Mayall from Valley, who has spent 12 months as a COVID-19 vaccination volunteer.

Jean was a ward volunteer at Ysbyty Penrhos Stanley until the pandemic struck, and restrictions meant she could not go.

Undeterred, she applied to be in the vaccination volunteer programme and 12 months later, she is still doing her important role.

She meets and greets the public, putting them at ease before they go forward to be vaccinated, and also checks their appointments and fitness status.

She said: “What a lovely surprise and honour to be chosen as a ‘Hidden Hero’.

“Before I retired, I worked for the NHS for almost 19 years on the Child Health immunisation and vaccination programme. To be part of the COVID-19 team is like coming home.

“Being a volunteer is rewarding in so many ways; the public and the clinical teams are very appreciative of our help, and I in turn would like to pay tribute to my fellow marshals and to the vaccination teams for the sterling work they do.

“Our days are long but the work carries on.”

Mrs Crosbie added: “Without people like Jean, the brilliant vaccination programme would not work so well and I would like to thank her and all the volunteers for all they do to keep us safe during these COVID times.

“Many congratulations to someone who puts others first. Like all of our Hidden Heroes, she is an inspiration and the award is well deserved.”
