SP ENERGY Networks has completed a £13 million project to upgrade and strengthen its distribution network across Anglesey to support a cleaner, greener future.

As part of the project, the energy network provider has constructed two new circuits and installed an additional grid transformer to reinforce the electrical infrastructure across Anglesey.

The new 132,000 volt circuit and grid transformer will 'futureproof' the network and provide a more resilient energy supply to the existing 38,000 homes and businesses on the island.

The upgrade also helps prepare the network for increased use as more people switch to green energy solutions such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. This is a key part of SP Energy Networks leading the way towards ambitious net zero emissions targets.

Additionally, a new 33,000 volt circuit has also been constructed between Llangaffo and Llanfairpwll, to further strengthen the quality of supply.

Mark Sobczak, 132kV General Manager at SP Energy Networks, said: “This substantial investment represents a major strengthening of the existing network on Anglesey and the upgrade will help facilitate growth and future development across the island.

“We anticipate that the level of energy needs and generation required will increase over the coming years and this project ensures that future developments and green energy solutions on Anglesey can be supported.

“I’m proud of the work the team has done to deliver the project, working closely with the local community to ensure the project best meets their needs whilst disruptions were kept to a minimum. This is about ensuring nobody is left behind in the journey to net zero emissions.”

SP Energy Networks’ new 132,000 volt trident wood pole line is 750 metres in length, stretching from the area east of Valley across the A55 to the north of Caergeiliog. 650 metres of underground cable then runs into Cymyran Road to its existing substation, where an additional grid transformer has been installed to prepare for future requirements.

The new 33,000 volt circuit between Llangaffo and Llanfairpwll is 9.2km in length, with the wood pole section being 7.8km and underground sections totalling 1.4km.

The work has also seen 340 metres of existing overhead lines and seven wooden poles removed from just north of the Valley.

Cllr Gwilym O Jones, of Isle of Anglesey County Council, said: “The project team at SP Energy Networks first approached me in 2017 to make me aware of the project and its aims. Since then I have been kept informed of the progress and I am delighted now to see the completion of these works that will benefit communities on Anglesey.”
