A convicted arsonist who’d started a fire in revenge after his dad threw away his winkles was returned to jail for breaching a restraining order by making repeated phone calls to his father.

Darren Bates, aged 38, of Holyhead, had been jailed for three years and received the restraining order at Caernarfon crown court in November 2018.

The blaze had involved recycling boxes under the front window of his parents’ home.

But Sara Worland, prosecuting, told magistrates at Llandudno that the day after the defendant was freed from jail in August, his father Derick had received phone calls during which there had been heavy breathing and giggling.

The defendant was of no fixed address and located on Monday.

The prosecutor said there were numerous previous convictions and a history of non-compliance with court orders.

Sion Hughes, defending, said he pleaded guilty to the breach and the purpose of the calls was to apologise to his mother.

He had a bad relationship with his father, the lawyer said.

Bates, unemployed and living at a B&B at Holyhead, claimed he thought the order had ended.

Jailing Bates for 20 weeks and imposing a further three-year restraining order, court chairwoman Grainne McDonagh told him: "This is a deliberate breach of a crown court order.

"The offence occurred only one day after you were released from custody.

"The calls were menacing.”
