WHEN property developer Derek Thomas, 56, discovered Capel Mawr, a run-down former chapel based in the Gwynedd village of Llanrug, he immediately saw potential.

The property came with a rich history, having originally served as a chapel to the local community before being converted into a film studio by Welsh language channel S4C, who eventually moved their operations to Cardiff.

After purchasing the chapel, Derek first renovated it into an apartment to live in himself, before going on to embark on an extensive renovation to turn it into spacious and stylish three-bedroom holiday home, with this opening to guests in 2010.

Derek’s efforts to restore the chapel were welcomed by the community of Llanrug, with residents thrilled to see the place they were once married in or watched their first film at put to good use once again.

Following the success of Capel Mawr, Derek went on to renovate the chapel’s former basement into a second holiday let in 2018.

Boasting five bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as an open plan living area, the property has been created to resemble the style of a Manhattan loft.

The success of both of Derek’s unique holiday homes is evident through his earnings, with Capel Mawr and Basement 19 generating more than £60,000 and 53 bookings in an average year.

The two properties are almost fully booked this summer, while the calendar is already filling up for 2022 – with a stronger staycation market set to remain a fixture in the UK following a year of restrictions.

Derek said: “I entered the world of holiday lettings back in 2010 and I haven’t looked back since.

“The renovations to Capel Mawr and Basement 19 were challenging at times, but I’m so glad I decided to take the plunge and it has become somewhat of a passion of mine.

“It’s been fantastic sharing the properties with visitors and I’ve loved being able to welcome people back in recent weeks after such a difficult year for everyone.

“Guests come from across the UK to explore this wonderful part of Wales, taking advantage of the stunning views and scenic trails.

“I really trust the team at Sykes Holiday Cottages, and they’ve been incredibly supportive – they let me take the lead on how I wanted to progress, while helping me to effectively advertise both properties.

“Who knows, maybe I’ll be adding another to my portfolio soon to make the most of Britain’s staycation boom.”
