A BANGOR restaurant has been slapped with a zero-out-of-five rating by food hygiene inspectors.

Caffi 364, on Stryd Fawr, was given the minimum score by the Food Standards Agency following an assessment in early October.

A food safety officer found there was a 'major improvement necessary' in hygienic food handling, with poor preparation, cooking and storage of products that would be served to customers.

A major improvement is also required for the cleanliness and conditions of the premises, with a lack of appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.

The inspector also found the management of food safety needed serious improvement, without checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.

There may also have been evidence that staff did not know about food safety, with the inspecting officer not confident that standards would be maintained in future.

Caffi 364 is the only restaurant, cafe or canteen in the city to have a zero rating.

Of the 514 restaurants, cafes and canteens that have been rated in Gwynedd, a total of 446 or 87 per cent have a rating of five.
