A GROUP which looks after people on a night out in Wrexham is looking for more members.

The Street Pastors are Christians from local churches who spend time on the streets during the busier evenings in the town, in order to offer help to people who might need it.

Wrexham's group was set up in 2006, the first in Wales and the 7th in the UK, by Gareth Jones.

As well as offering company to people who may be upset or frustrated, or may have had too much to drink, they try to offer practical help such as bottled water, flip flops, lollipops and more.

Mr Jones said: "We offer a listening ear and we're here to care for people, as well as helping in practical ways.

"We do carry a rucksack with a stock of things in but one of the most common items we need to give out is flip flops.

"If we can we'll escort them home, otherwise we will just spend time with them.

"No two nights are ever the same."

Mr Jones said at one time, the group had up to 35 volunteers, but that number has dipped to between 15 and 20 - and not all of those members are back out on the streets yet due to covid.

He encouraged anyone who may be interested in joining to visit the Street Pastors website: https://streetpastors.org/locations/wrexham/

Looking ahead to the festive season, he added: "We would always aim to be on the streets a little bit more at Christmas.

"We work closely with the council, police and other partners in the night time economy.

"It's normally our busiest time of the year."
