A GWYNEDD Council cabinet member has encouraged residents to voice their opinions on the impact of the LleCHI scheme in the area’s quarrying communities.

Earlier this year, the slate landscape of northwest Wales became the latest location to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, having received the honour at the latest session of the World Heritage Committee.

The six areas that make up the site include landscape and areas in Dyffryn Ogwen, Dinorwig Quarry, Dyffryn Nantlle, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gorseddau and Prince of Wales Quarries, and Bryneglwys Quarry area in Abergynolwyn.

Alongside the development of the World Heritage Site nomination, Gwynedd Council received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund Great Place Scheme, the Snowdonia Partnership and Gwynedd Rural Innovation Fund to support activities known as the 'LleCHI' scheme.

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council's Cabinet Member for Economy and Community, said: “Through the LleCHI project, the council led various activities which included young slate ambassadors, arts projects in our schools, developing a site-wide interpretation plan and artwork such as colourful and striking murals in many slate towns and villages.

“LleCHI focused on community engagement, local empowerment, destination improvement, community regeneration and pride in the communities of the slate landscape of northwest Wales area in preparation for the designation.

“You may have seen some LleCHI projects while roaming the area or even participated in some of the projects.

“Several murals, colourful banners, information panels, workshops and plays have been created and maintained over the last two years.

“We are keen to hear your views on the impact of the LleCHI scheme in our quarrying communities as the project comes to an end this year.

“Your comments will be very useful as we plan for the future.”

The questionnaire is for residents, organisations and businesses.

The information will be used to see what is the impact of the LleCHI scheme and identify any lessons, and will also help us plan for the future.
