A STUDENT from Penrhosgarnedd, Bangor, has been crowned the winner of this year’s Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship from Coleg Cymraeg.

Morgan Siôn Owen, who has just received his A-levels in drama, English literature and Welsh language from Ysgol Tryfan, Bangor, won the scholarship to study Welsh at Cardiff University.

The Coleg Cymraeg's Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship is awarded to an individual who has applied for one of the Coleg Cymraeg's main scholarships, who lives in Gwynedd and wants to study a course entirely through the medium of Welsh at university.

The scholarship is worth £1,000 a year (or £3,000 across three years).

Morgan said: “I’m extremely grateful to Cyngor Gwynedd and the Coleg Cymraeg for the chance to win the scholarship this year.

“I’m really looking forward to going to Cardiff University to study Welsh. I have a passionate interest in the subject and all the literary and professional skills it will offer me.

“A degree in Welsh will give me the chance to improve my confidence to write and give me opportunities for the future, and the money will certainly support me over the next three years.”

Dr Dafydd Trystan, registrar of the Coleg Cymraeg, said: “On behalf of the Coleg, I would like to congratulate Morgan on winning the scholarship this year and wish him every success at Cardiff University.

“We would also like to thank Cyngor Gwynedd for their continued support for this important scheme.”

Cemlyn Rees Williams, cabinet member for education at Cyngor Gwynedd, added: “As a council, we congratulate Morgan Siôn Owen on his success in securing the Coleg Cymraeg's Cyngor Gwynedd Scholarship.

“Cyngor Gwynedd is proud to support students from Gwynedd who want to study and develop their careers through the medium of Welsh, and we are happy to be able to work with the Coleg Cymraeg and contribute to its vital work promoting Welsh-medium higher education provision.

“We wish Morgan all the best with his studies at Cardiff.”
