MORE than 7,000 packed into Rhyl Events Arena to enjoy an evening of top class talent.

Sir Tom Jones wowed concert goes with a selection of songs last Wednesday (September 1) from his new album ‘Surrounded by Time’ without forgetting the favourites ‘Delilah’ and ‘Green Green Grass of Home’.

Sir Tom's first performance in Wales of 2021 was organised by Orchard Live in partnership with Denbighshire Leisure Ltd.

Jamie Groves, managing director of Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, said: “What a fantastic way to reintroduce live music to people after a difficult period. Sir Tom Jones had the whole crowd singing along, the atmosphere was electric.

"Warm up performer OTTO and support act Megan McKenna added a fantastic dynamic to the concert, and together with Sir Tom Jones made it an evening filled with incredible entertainment from start to finish that will never be forgotten.

"September has started with a bang for Denbighshire Leisure and we are now looking forward to planning and hosting many more live concerts like this in the future, with Orchard Live.”

Sir Tom started the evening off with ‘What’s New Pussycat’ which sent the crowd wild.

He performed a mix of old and new, rhythm, rock and blues and had the audience singing and dancing along, before winding down the evening with new song ‘I’m Growing Old’ which paid tribute to his late wife, with not a dry eye in sight.

Connor Cupples of the Cardiff-based concert promoter Orchard Live said: “We’ve had so many compliments from concert goers, who said the whole experience was fantastic.

"We cannot wait to bring more big name artists to North Wales in partnership with Denbighshire Leisure Ltd.”

Reader Trish Williams posted on the Rhyl Journal Facebook page said: "Sometimes when you hear singers live they aren’t as good, but Sir Tom has still got a great voice. I thought it was an amazing night."

Carman Colwell said: "I love Tom Jones."

Gillian P Joseph said: "It was bitterly cold but Tom was superb. A legend!"

Andy Snook, however, said the concert wasn't quite what he expected.

"Got to be honest I was really looking forward to seeing him," he said.

"Still has an amazing voice but I thought the concert was a bit dower and self-indulged.

"He even changed the arrangements on his older hits which didn’t really hit the mark."
