CAERNARFON Golf Club has announced the appointment of a new head professional ahead of its appearance at the Welsh National Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) Championship in Aberdyfi next week.

Jonathan Kelly, 50, has been a qualified PGA professional since 1999, having turned pro three years earlier, and will start his new role at the club on Tuesday, September 7.

Jonathan will then represent Caernarfon for the first time at the Welsh National PGA Championship at Aberdyfi Golf Club on September 8-9.

A post on Caernarfon Golf Club’s Facebook page read: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of PGA Professional Jonathan Kelly to Caernarfon GC.

“He is looking forward to starting in his new role and will provide a fantastic service to the members and visitors.

“He will be busy stocking up the pro shop over the next few weeks and will be on hand to provide advice, club repairs, club fitting and lessons.”

Jonathan, who lives in Tregarth and is originally from Llandudno, said he considers it a great privilege to be given such responsibility at a golf club as reputable as Caernarfon.

Having played at the club many times before, Jonathan, who started his career at Conwy Golf Club, is looking forward to getting know more of the members and representing Caernarfon at events like next week’s in Aberdyfi.

“It’s an absolute honour to be given the position of head professional at any establishment. Caernarfon is a well-established golf club, so it’s certainly an honour,” said Jonathan, who was also head professional at Rhos-on-Sea between 2005 and 2010.

“I’ll know a few (Caernarfon GC members), and I know a few of them will know me. I’ve not spent much time with the members at Caernarfon, but I’ll certainly get to know quite a few quickly.

“It was a very warm welcome that I had on Wednesday (September 1).”

Ahead of entering the Welsh National PGA Championship next week, Jonathan added he is in quietly confident mood, having reacquainted himself with the course last weekend.

He added: “I went down to Aberdyfi last weekend, just to remind myself of the course. I played it a few times, and I felt really comfortable. But everything’s different on the day.”
