Ongoing issues with the roof of an Anglesey special school have led education chiefs to submit plans for temporary classrooms in time for the new term.

Earlier this month it was revealed that some lessons could take place at Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni and Canolfan Plas Arthur due to the ongoing structural issues at Canolfan Addysg y Bont.

The first floor of the special school was temporarily closed in July after it was discovered that the roof needed to be repaired, with subsequent investigations finding that extensive maintenance work is needed.

According to education chiefs on the island, it’s expected that the 2014 opened building’s first floor will continue to be out of use until later in the school year.

But to equip the school for the new school year, plans have now been submitted for temporary classrooms.

According to the planning application, which has now been submitted, the prefab building would house two classrooms, a group room and toilets for the use of pupils at Canolfan Addysg y Bont.

The application goes on to state: “Due to the need to carry out essential maintenance works to part of the existing roof at Canolfan Addysg y Bont, the first floor classrooms will not be available.

“As a result additional classroom facilities will be required on the campus. This application is submitted to provide two classrooms to contribute to meeting the shortfall in available teaching spaces.

“The provision of these classrooms allows the children to receive education directly adjacent to the existing school building.

“The application is for a temporary period of six months, but will be reviewed as work progresses on the roof and the full extent of the remedial works are ascertained.”

The current disruption is thought to mainly affect older pupils, school years 7 and above, although the first floor also includes the hydrotherapy and soft play facilities used across the school.

In a letter sent out to parents last week, it was noted that secondary age pupils would return on September 6.

Speaking earlier this month the council’s education portfolio holder, Cllr Meirion Jones, said, “It goes without saying that our main priority is the care and well-being of all pupils, their families and staff at Canolfan Addysg y Bont.

“We are working in partnership to finalise contingency plans to ensure that pupils can stay close to the school when they return for the new term in September.

“Our staff are working hard to keep any disruption to an absolute minimum and provide pupils  with a safe environment to work and learn.

“This remains an ongoing process. Arrangements will be shared with parents through the school as soon as they are finalized and confirmed.”
