Anglesey Council has been working to put preparations in place to provide a home for those fleeing Afghanistan in response to the country’s escalating crisis.

As part of the council’s commitment to the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy, one family from Afghanistan will be provided a home and essential support on Anglesey.

Under the policy, any current or former member of staff who is assessed to be under serious threat to life will be offered priority relocation to the UK.

Anglesey Council leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, said: “The tragic scenes witnessed over the last week as people try to escape from Afghanistan weigh heavily on us all.

“It’s important that we support these people and help them resettle within their new community.

“We remain committed to support refugees, and we are clear that there is a moral and human need to continue to offer support to people who are forced to flee from their homes.”

The council is working with private landlords and housing associations to provide accommodation to meet the initial pledge to house one Afghan family.

Housing portfolio holder, Councillor Alun Mummery, added: “The images seen over the last week in Afghanistan have been harrowing.

“Like many other local authorities across Wales, Anglesey stands ready to provide sanctuary for those fleeing the terrifying events taking place in the country.

“We will constantly review the arrangements and provision required to provide support to Afghan refugees.”
