A pair of Anglesey train stations will become open to passengers once again later this month.

After a long time with trains passing Valley and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll (Llanfairpwll) stations without stopping, Transport for Wales has confirmed that both will reopen from Saturday, August 21.

The two stations were closed during the coronavirus pandemic, with Transport for Wales saying trains couldn't stop at either because the platforms were too short to open more than one door.

This meant maintaining a sufficient social distance was not possible as people got on and off the trains.

Rhun ap Iorwerth, MS for Ynys Môn, welcomed the news, saying: "I am pleased that we will see trains stopping at Valley and Llanfairpwllgwyngyll stations again after many months of calling on the Welsh Government and Transport for Wales to reopen them.

“These stations are vital for people in Valley and Llanfairpwll, and it has been too long a time for the residents of the area not to be able to access the service.”

At the beginning of July, the MS and Llanfairpwll councillor Alun Wyn Mummery spoke on Newyddion S4C about their frustration at the failure to reopen the stations, after a long period of questioning and pushing for the decision to be revisited.

And while the MS added that he wished both stations had reopened earlier, he is pleased that there has finally been a breakthrough in this regard.

“I'm glad that train services are now available to them, at long last,” he said.

"I still can't understand why there couldn't have been a way to open it safely before now, and I've made my frustration clear, but better late than never."
