Ynys Môn Rhun ap Iorwerth met with Ronald Akkerman, Managing Director at Mona Island Dairy to discuss the company’s ambitions and plans following the announcement that a £20m investment would be made to develop the cheese plant, creating 100 jobs on the island.

He welcomed the announcement, having consistently called on the Welsh Government to invest in the food sector on Anglesey, including the possibility of creating a food production business park on the island over the years.

The scheme will see Mona Island Dairy factory become the most sustainable in Europe, running solely on renewable electricity.

The funding will support production of Welsh and continental cheeses at the 25,000 sq ft facility, based on Mona Industrial Park, Holyhead.

When completed in September, the factory will be the most modern anywhere on the continent, capable of producing 7,000 tons of cheese a year.

Following his visit, Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said: “It’s great to see Welsh Government investing in these kind of projects that will not only create new jobs on the island, but create green jobs for generations to come.

"It’s a further driver to push for the development of the food sector, building on the expertise we have in the many food companies we have here on the island, to help them grow and create jobs.

"I will be continuing these conversations with Ministers in the coming weeks."

Out of the £20m investment, Welsh Government will contribute £3m from the Business, Innovation and Tourism Escalator Scheme

The Plaid Cymru politician added: “It was great to get a glimpse of how things will be running at the plant very soon.

"I’d like to thank the team for their warm welcome, and I wish them all the best as they move forward with their plans.

"Mona Island Dairy will be a great boost to the agriculture sector on the island, but also a boost to our fantastic food sector.”
