Planners have signed off on a project to build 60 affordable homes on the outskirts of Llangefni.

These proposals form part of plans that were given outline planning approval in 2017, including a new engineering centre, a hotel, restaurant and up to 153 homes at the town’s Coleg Menai campus.

But with the college having sold part of the site to a north Wales housing association in 2019, full permission has now been awarded to press on with the building 60 homes on 4.2 acres of land known as ‘plots 2 & 3.’

On Monday it was confirmed that Anglesey Council planning officers have now approved the ‘reserved matters’ that remained to be resolved, meaning that work will now be allowed to start on the 60 properties.

The mix of properties including 25 two bed, 19 three bed and 16 two bed apartments which, as well as associated access, car parking and landscaping, are being developed by the Clwyd Alyn housing association.

The awarding of outline permission for the development in 2017 came despite some local objections, with some locals describing the proposals as “overdevelopment.”

But planning officers were satisfied that the benefits greatly outweighed the negatives, although it was also accepted “there was no such thing as a perfect planning application”.

Including plans for 153 homes in all, these were spread over four separate sites, with the latest detailed planning approval relating to one two of those, with the remainder still undeveloped for the time being.

Clwyd Alyn Housing has been approached for comment.

But when the purchase of the plots was announced in 2019, the association’s Executive Director of Development, Craig Sparrow, said: “We are dedicated to providing high quality affordable homes across North and Mid-Wales.

“We will be working with The Isle of Anglesey County Council and Welsh Government over the coming months to deliver another distinctive development providing an excellent housing option for local people.

“The purchase has been made possible thanks to Welsh Government funding and partnership support with The Isle of Anglesey County Council.”

Grŵp Llandrillo Menai Executive Director, Kath Coughlin, added:  “The early sale of plots two and three delivers another phase of our ambitious site wide college redevelopment programme.

“The funds secured from the sale will continue to be reinvested in the college to further enhance our student learning experience.”
