A FAMILY of seven had a lucky escape after a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire in their home on Anglesey.

At 2.45am, on Tuesday, April 6, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a fire at a terraced property on London Road in Holyhead.

Crews arrived at the scene to find the family – two adults and five young children, had escaped the fire.

Nobody was injured however, all were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor by ambulance to be checked.

The fire, which is believed to have started outside the back of the property, then spread to the house via the back door. Fire damage was caused to the door and smoke damage has been caused to the inside of the property.

Group Manager Simon Bromley, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We regularly remind residents of the importance of having smoke alarms and testing them weekly and this incident reinforces this message. Fortunately, the family escaped but it could have been a lot worse had they not have been alerted by the smoke detector.

“We also urge residents to ensure they keep escape routes clear and not to ensure that any materials that are stored outside are stored safely.”

Readers are reminded to keep up to date with the latest smoke alarm safety advice:

  • Install smoke alarms on each level in a home, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Keep them dust free and test them once a week to make sure they are working.
