A CONSULTATION has been launched over the location of border inspections at Holyhead Port.

Following the end of the EU transition period a number of different checks are required for goods entering the UK, meaning border control posts (BCPs) have to be established.

At Holyhead, they will required for goods such as animals, plants and products of animal origin entering Wales from the Republic of Ireland.

The checks are the responsibility of the Welsh Government and will be in place to ensure goods do not pose a risk to public health, or to the spread of animal or plant diseases.

The new BCP required for Holyhead Port is currently proposed for Plot 9 at Parc Cybi, situated just off the A55.

Residents within one kilometre of the site have been sent information about the proposed BCP as part of the consultation.

The planning consultation is under a Special Development Order, which aim to ensure that a project can undergo a faster planning process should time become a critical factor.

Lesley Griffiths, Welsh Government Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs, said: “Following the substantial changes to our relationship with the EU we are required to establish a border control post for the port of Holyhead.

“While the timetable has been amended by the UK Government for the introduction of checks, we remain in discussion with them to ensure enough time is provided to adapt to the new circumstances in an effective manner, minimising disruption for our Welsh businesses.”
