TWO redundant telephone boxes in Llanberis have been put to a new and colourful use.

Four years ago, Y Festri bought two decommissioned phone boxes on the High Street at either end of Llanberis. These were perfect and imaginative places to display arts projects.

Y Festri is small village hall and a community arts charity run by volunteers in the centre of Llanberis, it promotes and initiates visual and performing arts with partners CircoArts. Before lockdown it ran weekly art and circus classes for children and young people.

A spokesman for Y Festri said: “The children’s art classes ‘Make Your Marks’, run by CircoArts, has displayed lots of its work in Y Festri phone boxes. Putting the children’s work in the phone boxes gave their art a longer life and meant it was seen by more people in the community and helped develop a sense of pride in the village.

“Displaying the charities work, also brings joy to the village, everyone loves to see what’s in it.

The themes have celebrated Llanberis's history, environment and culture, as well as seasonal and Welsh cultural events.

“Y Festri phone boxes have also helped Llanberis get through Covid. When lockdown hit, local illustrator Abbie Parry collected uplifting messages from the village and displayed them alongside beautiful painted designs. It was a really positive way to help people through the difficult times.”
