The day to day running of a popular Caernarfon park could be transferred to the town council in a bid to secure its future.

A meeting of Gwynedd Council’s cabinet is expected to approve the  handing over of the lease and management of Parc Coed Helen, which currently falls under its “arms length” leisure company, Byw’n Iach.

While the authority currently hands over  £12,450 towards the running costs of the park, savings have been identified if Caernarfon Town Council adds the park to its existing management duties.

Describing the park as “an important resource for residents and visitors to Caernarfon,” the report notes that “positive discussions” have been held between Gwynedd and the Caernarfon Town councils regarding the potential transfer.

Facilities at the park include football, rugby and cricket pitches, a bowling-green, small golf course, skate park, play equipment and a building including toilets, changing rooms, an office and caretaker’s flat.

The report says the town council has already resolved to accept the transfer of the park on a 99 year lease, and for a “nominal sum”.

It adds: “The town council is happy to maintain the existing services for the community, while also seeking opportunities to improve the facilities for the future.

“Caernarfon Town Council will consider different management options, including charging a parking fee for long stay vehicles. Overnight parking is a problem on the site and it is considered that more income can be generated by providing resources for visitors to stay.

“The town council is not eager to charge parking fees on short stay park users, and Gwynedd Council will discuss the details of their plans over the coming months.”

In principle, Gwynedd Council has also agreed to contribute towards maintaining the play equipment for up to three years after the transfer.
