Planners have approved proposal for a new sports hall as part of an £8m upgrade of a college campus.

Having been given the green light by Anglesey Council planning officers, the new sports hall is set to be available for both public and student use, while creating 12 full-time jobs.

Located at the Coleg Menai campus in Llangefni, it forms part of plans to move the entire Sports, Outdoor and Public Services departments from Bangor to Anglesey, as well as a range of A-Level STEM subjects.

In all, the new facilities will include: A five-court sports hall; Gym – cardio zone; Gym – multi gym/weights zone; Activity studio; Storage areas; Male and female changing rooms, toilets and showers;

Teaching rooms (variety of sizes); Exercise physiology suite; Staff workroom and social space.

Wyn Thomas Director of Strategic Projects at Grwp Llandrillo Menai, confirmed that the £8m project will see a total of £28m having been invested at the Llangefni campus since 2016, also involving the creation of coach parking areas within existing site car park.

Aled Jones-Griffiths, Principal of Coleg Menai and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor said: “This really exciting development will provide our Learners with first-rate modern teaching facilities.

“I am confident the co-location of the Sports and Public Services department; Science and Maths A- Levels, with the already best-in-class industry specification Engineering, Electronics, and Technology teaching facilities at our £13.6m SteM Centre completed only last year, will offer

our learners a genuinely unbeatable set of options.”

Dafydd Evans, the Chief Executive, added: “We have worked very closely and successfully with Anglesey County Council and Welsh Government for a number of years in order to realise a very ambitious strategic Masterplan for our Llangefni Campus.

“This effective partnership has included the development of an £11.4m Link Road by Anglesey Council and the Welsh Government, without which we simply could not expand.

“As a result of this next project, our Llangefni Campus will in fact become the second largest across the whole group.

“Major developments are then set to follow at Bangor and at other GLLM Sites, all of which are assisted by the Welsh Government’s 21st Century Schools Programme.”

Plans are already on Gwynedd Council’s desk for the relocation of the Bangor campus from Ffordd Ffriddoedd to a site at Parc Menai, on the city’s outskirts.
