THERE has been a small additional number of patients and staff testing positive for coronavirus at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, the First Minister has said.

At Friday's Welsh Government media briefing on coronavirus, Mark Drakeford gave an update on the second outbreak at the hospital.

The First Minister told the briefing that "overnight there are a small number of patients and staff that have been newly tested as positive, they are in single figures in both cases.”

Mr Drakeford added: “Four wards are currently closed at the Maelor Hospital as a result of the outbreak.

"Measures are being taken across the hospital to reduce staff and patient movement, to step up staff testing, and to make sure that the most stringent infection prevention and control measures are in place.”

The outbreak was declared in early November and, on Friday, there were between 80 and 90 patients at the Maelor itself, between 40 and 50 cases in community hospital settings, and just over 20 staff that had tested positive.

The incident management team is meeting twice weekly.
