TOWNS across Anglesey and Gwynedd have decided not to hold traditional Remembrance Sunday events because of the current coronavirus restrictions.

Many have planned to put in place alternative arrangements.

In Anglesey, Beaumaris Town Council decided in conjunction with the Royal British Legion, that due to Covid 19 restrictions there will be no formal parade and no Church Service this year, but there will be a short Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial with a one bugler, which will be streamed live on the Council's Facebook page.

Poppy wreaths may be laid by other people after the site has cleared or at any time in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Town Council said: “We have asked for relatives to send photographs of their family members who were involved in past conflicts, which have been posted onto the glass doors of the Town Hall in Castle Street.”

In Llangefni a spokesperson for the Town Council has said: “Unfortunately, in line with Government and Local British Legion Guidelines, due to the Covid 19 outbreak, the Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade in Llangefni, has been cancelled for this year.

“The Town Mayor, together with a handful of Veterans will be laying Wreaths at the Memorial with a bugler present.”

Holyhead plans services at the Memorial and in the Field of Remembrance simultaneously. A spokesman said: “With Covid restrictions this year we are limited to the number of attendances at one site so we decided to hold two services to accommodate as many we can.

“The event this year is invitation only and we are urging the general public on this occasion to mark this event at home with a two minute silence.”

It is a similar story in Gwynedd. Caernarfon Town Council has said: “Due to the situation with Covid 19, the Remembrance Sunday event will not take place on Castle Square this year. This is very disappointing but there is not much choice. The decision has been made in consultation with the Police, Gwynedd Council and the Royal British Legion.

“We will be filming a service and will post that on the Town Council's Facebook page.”

Bangor City Council has also decided not to hold a formal Remembrance Commemoration event. A spokesman said: “The Council is encouraging residents to remain at home and take part in the on lime commemoration and the National Remembrance doorstep initiative.”

A spokesperson for Porthmadog Town Council said it will be adhering to the Welsh Government's Firebreak rules so there will not be a public Remembrance Service held in Porthmadog this year.”
