PROPOSALS to build a £16 billion nuclear power station at Wylfa on Anglesey have been scrapped.

The Isle of Anglesey County Council has received written confirmation Hitachi is withdrawing from the project.

Horizon Nuclear Power, the Hitachi subsidiary taking the project forward had originally stated it would create up to 850 permanent jobs during operation at its Wylfa. The construction force needed to build the power station would have been considerably greater.

But last January the company announced it was suspending work on the project as it hadn’t been possible to reach an agreement on the financing and associated commercial arrangements in time to sustain ongoing levels of development.

Anglesey Council Leader Councillor Llinos Medi said, “I have been informed that Hitachi intends to withdraw from the Wylfa Newydd project. However, I understand that this decision still needs to be ratified tomorrow.”

“If this decision is confirmed - then it will be a devastating blow to the Anglesey economy. The Wylfa Newydd project had the potential to transform the Anglesey and North Wales economy, particularly that of North Anglesey.”

“I will be calling for an urgent meeting with both UK and Welsh Governments to discuss the future of the Wylfa site.”

The Welsh Government has been approached for comment.
