THE MP for Arfon has pledged his support for the victims of flooding after witnessing the "heartbreaking" damage caused by Storm Francis.

Dozens of people in Gwynedd were evacuated during heavy rain and strong winds on Tuesday night, with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service handling 52 separate incidents across its region.

Eight people were forced to leave from their properties in Abergwyngregyn, another six in Beddgelert and one resident in Bethesda after internal flooding to their properties. Some stayed with their neighbours and others in temporary accommodation overnight.

Hywel Williams MP and Bethesda councillor Rheinallt Puw visited the town to help residents and business owners as they tried to clean up the damage after the River Ogwen burst its banks.

"It was heartbreaking to see first-hand how residents’ homes and businesses had been devastated by the flood waters which rose so quickly there was little time to prepare or move out of its way," Mr Williams said.

"I’d like to pay tribute to the community response and the work of the emergency services and Council staff who were out in the early hours of the morning rescuing residents and shoring-up defences.

"This is the last thing residents need. It is imperative local people and businesses affected get the help they need to get back on their feet. Our office stands ready to provide support and advice should people require it."

Arfon member of the Senedd Siân Gwenllian said she is also in close contact with councillors and communities affected by the floods.

"I was saddened to hear reports of flooding which struck parts of Bethesda and Abergwyngregyn overnight," Mrs Gwenllian said. "As if things were not bad enough for families and local businesses, this will only add to the uncertainty felt by many.

"I know the impact of flooding is devastating and for those who live with this constant fear it’s really difficult to overstate the impact this has on their day to day lives; forced out of their homes, possessions, some of sentimental value being thrown in a skip.

"But it does make it all the more important that there is such a strong and resilient community here in Arfon ready and willing to provide a helping hand when needed.

"My office will be keeping in touch with local Councillors, communities, and local residents over the next few days."
