A 'GOOD SAMARITAN' sprung into action to save the life of a young boy who had slipped and fallen into the pools below the main Llanberis waterfall.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team (LLMRT) say that, on Sunday afternoon, a member of their team was out and about in the vicinity of Llanberis Waterfall when they heard a lot of shouting and commotion.

They saw that a child had slipped and fallen into the pools and the member in question immediately alerted the team (who were dealing with a separate incident on Snowdon at the time), as well as the other emergency services.

Another member of the casualty group had entered the water to try and reach the child but the child was washed over the main waterfall.

A LLMRT spokesperson said: "Having been alerted by the commotion, a local Good Samaritan saw the child floating in the pool below the falls, entered the water and was able to recover them to the side, where other members of the public assisted them out.

"Rescue team members arrived on scene and were able to immediately start treating the casualty as well as those who had been in the water and witnessed the incident.

"Two team doctors were on scene and able to assist Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust paramedics as well as team members specifically trained in water rescue. The casualty was transported to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital.

"The Good Samaritan who entered the bottom pool was a very strong swimmer and used to cold water, they did however, experience the effects of cold water shock with a noticeable reduction in muscle power.

"While beautiful, Llanberis waterfall has been the scene of several fatalities and very near misses. This incident was a genuine accident, these things happen occasionally and there is no blame to be apportioned. That said, we continue to dissuade anybody from swimming in the pools below the falls."

The Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team is a fully voluntary organisation who respond to those in need on Snowdon and the surrounding mountains. The Team is on-call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and relies entirely on donations from members of the public to carry out this essential life-saving rescue service.
