A MAN was taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation during a house fire in Gwynedd.

North Wales Fire and Rescue say the cause of the house fire in Llanllyfni, which took place just before 7.30pm last night, was believed to be a candle knocked over in a bedroom.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "A male casualty was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Two appliances from Caernarfon attended.

"The cause of the fire is believed to be a candle knocked over in a bedroom which resulted in less than 5 sq of damage. The incident was brought under control by 8.33pm."

Following this incident, North Wales Fire and Rescue are keen to remind people of candle safety advice.

Issuing some pointers, Gwyn Jones, Community Safety Manager said: "Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder, on a stable surface, and away from materials that may catch fire - such as curtains. Children and pets should never be left alone with lit candles

"Never leave a lit candle unattended. Put candles out whenever you leave the room, and make sure they’re put out completely at night. Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.

"Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but avoid draughts, vents or air currents - this will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping.

"Don’t move candles once they are lit and follow the manufacturer's recommendations on burn time and proper use."
