Locals and visitors alike are being urged to ‘Rediscover Anglesey Safely’

But with an influx of visitors also expected over coming weeks, the need to respect local communities has also been stressed with a reminder that Coronavirus remains a very real threat.

With the recent lifting of the five mile “stay local” guidelines, both locals and visitors alike are being urged to ‘Rediscover Anglesey Safely’ ahead of the expected reopening of self-contained holiday accommodation (Saturday) and the opening of pub beer gardens and outside eating (Monday).

But despite being closed since mid March, Anglesey Council has also revealed plans to reopen popular coastal car parks, in collaboration with National Resources Wales and other private landowners, as well as slipways and moorings around the Island from Monday, July 13.

In another measure designed to boost the economy, free parking will also be available in town centre car parks after 10am for a short period of time.

Cllr Carwyn Jones, the portfolio holder for economic development, described the last few months as “extremely tough” for our communities across the island as well as the tourism sector and local businesses in general.

He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “This should be a boost for town centre economies after what has been a difficult time, we all need to do our bit to support them.

“But I’d also like to highlight, when it comes to parking across the island, that people use the designated bays and don’t park on grass verges and if a particular area does appear busy to come back at a later time.”

He added, “For the economy of Ynys Mon and Wales to recover it will all depend on how the easing goes, to that extent there is a responsibility on us all to ensure responsible behaviour and following the correct measures.

“People have earned these greater freedoms through their discipline and concerted efforts to beat this terrible virus.

“But Coronavirus has not gone away and we must all act responsibly and respectfully – Anglesey residents and visitors alike. We all have an important role to play in protecting the island.

“To rediscover Anglesey safely, it is imperative that we show care and consideration of our surroundings and others; and that we closely follow Welsh Government and public health guidelines.”

But in a bid to encourage responsible behaviour over the coming weeks and months, the council has also issued a series of guidelines aimed to maintain the safety of all.

These, backed by Directors of the Anglesey Tourism Association, include:

If somewhere looks busy, come back when its quieter and safer

Respect others on the coast, in shops and in our communities

Keep to footpaths and bridleways

Use car parks and spaces, and not private land or highway verges

Respect the weather and tide – prepare thoroughly

Research, contact and book facilities and businesses in advance

Take your rubbish home

Protect yourself, residents and other visitors  – follow the guideline at all times

The council leader, Cllr Llinos Medi, added, “Coronavirus is still a threat to us all and working in partnership with our tourism industry to protect local communities is key.

“I’m grateful to the Anglesey Tourism Association for its support during this crisis; and its input has helped us develop key messages as part of the Rediscover Anglesey Safely campaign.

“The county council will continue to work closely with the association to ensure that visitors and local residents can enjoy the Island’s hospitality in a responsible and careful manner.”
