Gwynedd’s libraries will partially re-open next month under a ‘click and collect’ model.

With the county’s libraries having been shut since mid-March, the service’s recovery plan will allow residents to order new items and to return their library books.

Expected to be operational from early July, anyone wishing to borrow new books or other items will need to contact the library, or order through the online catalogue in the usual way.

The library will then contact users when the items are ready to be collected, and arrange a time for doing so.

Users will also be able to return their library books via boxes that will be outside all re-opened libraries.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries, said: “We are delighted to confirm our intention to reintroduce an element of the library service soon.

“We know that books offer great comfort to people of all ages, so it’s important that we can begin the journey to introduce the service in a new way which includes the home delivery service for those who are unable to collect from libraries.

“Obviously, the safety of users and staff is the priority, and our libraries will follow the Welsh Government guidelines on how to treat library books, to help ensure people’s safety and well-being.”

For those unable to visit their library to collect items – for whatever reason – it will be possible to order home delivery. This service will be available to anyone throughout Gwynedd who requires it.

Staff will also liaise with Home Service users, to begin visiting existing users again, with a range of materials including large print and audio books, can be ordered in Welsh and English.

A spokesman added that the council will also arrange for Bookstart Packs to be distributed to families of babies and toddlers.

Bag Books are also available, providing a multi-sensory story experience and suitable for users with learning difficulties or disabilities.

During this time DVDs are also available free of charge, with no fines are charged on any items at this time.

Cllr Thomas concluded, “We will be announcing more details of the exact arrangements soon, and it is important that residents understand that we will not be able to re-open the library buildings to the public in the near future.

“But we hope that the new arrangements that will be in place from next month will offer a step back towards normality for the many people in Gwynedd who value our library service.”
