WALES’ Health Minister addressed concerns after a chicken processing plant in Anglesey saw a localised outbreak of coronavirus.

At the daily coronavirus press conference, Vaughn Gething addressed several questions from reporters after a cluster of 13 coronavirus cases among staff on Monday, June 15, at the 2 Sisters factory in Llangefni were identified, with 110 more self-isolating as a precaution.

The minister said that news relating to the facility reiterates several important points.

He said: “It reiterates the fact that, even with a low prevalence of coronavirus, it has not gone. It reiterates the importance of social distancing and appropriate hygiene measures.

“It also reiterates the importance of our Test, Trace, Protect system and that people really do need to follow the advice they are given on getting a test and on self-isolating.

“Given this is a closed setting in which these people would have been working, I am obviously concerned that we may well see more confirmed cases of coronavirus.”

At present, as of June 17, Anglesey reports the lowest number of confirmed cases in North Wales with 280 infections to date.

Mr Gething adds that there is a partnership in place between Public Health Wales, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Anglesey Council working with 2 Sisters following the localised outbreak.

Production at the chicken processing plant in North Wales has since been shut down for a fortnight.

In a statement, the 2 Sisters Food Group said: "The health, safety and wellbeing of our colleagues is ultimately the thing that matters most at our business. We are a responsible company with people at its core. Without our people we are nothing.

"Therefore, in light of the current COVID-19 cases at our Llangefni site, we have decided to take the necessary action to clearly demonstrate how seriously we take this issue by doing the right thing.

"Doing the right thing means from today we will temporarily suspend production at our Llangefni site with immediate effect for a period of 14 days. We will not tolerate any unnecessary risks - however small - for our existing loyal workforce at the facility."
