HEAVY showers and thunderstorms may cause flooding and transport disruption in parts of North Wales as the Met Office issue a weather warning.

The yellow warning, which covers large parts of the region, came into force from 1pm today (Monday), and will last until 9pm in the evening.

The affected areas of Wales include Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Powys and Wrexham. The only county in the north to avoid the weather warning is the Isle of Anglesey.

The warning reads: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms will break out this afternoon before slowly fading this evening. Whilst not all places will be affected by these shower and thunderstorms, where they do occur torrential downpours are possible.

“15 to 25 mm rain may fall in an hour in some places whilst a few spots could see 30 to 40 mm rain in two or three hours. Frequent lightning is possible and a few places may see some hail.”

Thunderstorms can occur at any time of the year but it is during the summer months when thunderstorms in the UK are most likely to produce large hail, gusty winds and torrential downpours that can cause disruption to transport networks and damage property.
