THE mother of an Old Colwyn record breaker is celebrating her 70th birthday with an incredible challenge of her own.

On Monday, June 1, Linda Jeavons took the first steps on her 30 day, 786 mile challenge to walk a marathon each day within the parameters of lock down rules.

Linda - whose daughter Steph became the first Brit to circumnavigate the world on her Honda motorbike in 2018 - had originally planned the challenge on birthday on January 27.

However, since the pandemic started she has been able to complete the challenge under lockdown with a series of walks in the vicinity of her home in Penisarwaen in Snowdonia, and had even considered completing the challenge with 187 laps around her garden every day.

Linda, who is originally from Colwyn Bay, said: “For every decade of my adult life, I've set myself a challenge for the year I start that decade. When I turned 60 I cycled Land’s End to John O’Groats and when I turned 50 I ran the London Marathon.

"My original plan in January was to go away for June, which only has 30 days, so one less marathon, to complete the challenge.

"However, since then we've had the lock down, but no matter what, I was determined to complete the challenge.

"So I made a pros and cons list when I was still planning to do it in the garde and the positives far outweighed the negatives, which were that it is boring and My husband can talk to me anytime. That can also be a pro."

As lock down measures relaxed to allow travel within five miles, Linda - a retiree who used to work at Bangor University - has been able to mix and match routes around her home, Setting out at 5.30am to begin each day's challenge.

Steph said: “Mum has always been up for a challenge, she always sets herself goals and I am yet to see her fail at any of them.

“Lock down has seen her have to make a lot of adjustments to her route which makes the challenge even harder, but there was no chance of her delaying or cancelling. She never stops and always takes things on with a ‘no drama’ approach.

“What she is doing is amazing and yet the one thing she is not good at is shouting about her achievements.

“I have no doubt she will finish this - go mum!”

With the challenge, Linda is raising £1,000 for Blood Bikes Wales and the Wales Air Ambulance Charity. To donate visit the 'Linda Jeavons Walking' page on uk.virginmoneygiving.com.
