FIREFIGHTERS remain at the site of a landfill blaze in Wrexham.

Fire crews were called on Wednesday evening to a fire at the Hafod Quarry at around 7.12pm.

Crews from Johnstown, Wrexham, Llangollen, Ellesmere, Chirk and Llangollen, together with an incident command unit, were mobilised to tackle the large blaze.

On Friday, fire crews remained on scene to investigate the cause.

A spokesman for Natural Resources Wales took to social media to ask residents that are affected by smoke or odours to remain indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed on Saturday morning that one crew and a high volume pump remain at the site and an inspection is underway.

Johnstown Councillor David A Bithell - deputy leader of Wrexham council and lead member for place; environment a transport at the authority - posted an updte on his Facebook page on Friday evening. 

He said: "Fire and Rescue Service onsite to continue application of water to dampen down and will continue to ensure site and public safety and expect to fully extinguish by some time tomorrow (Saturday).

"Plume is now reported to be minimal and air quality equipment has been monitoring over night and today and levels are under the national threshold.

"The Met Office confirmed that weather conditions are expected to stay dry, warm, sunny and relatively still, no rain forecast.

"Public Health Wales now advise that residents can leave their properties and open windows and doors as long as they are not affected by any further smoke or odours coming from the site.

"Council officers are in regular communications with our partners in NRWF, Emergency Planning, Natural Resources Wales and Public Health Wales and we will continue this work for as long as required.

"Roads can now be re-opened and this will be carried out as soon as possible.

"Thanks to the Fire and Rescue service and other emergency services and emergency planning officers over the past few days."
