Plans to convert a former pub into apartments have been submitted to planning chiefs.

Gwynedd Council has received the formal bid to transform The Commercial, also known as Y Cwm, into flats covering three storeys.

The former pub, which stands on Commercial Square on the outskirts of the town centre, has been shut for several years.

According to the applicants, Aspire Homes (UK) Ltd, the plan is to convert it into one four bedroom and two two bedroom flats.

The design and access statement which has been submitted to the planning department, notes, “The proposal seeks to change the use of the existing building from former public house to C3 residential.

“The location of the building is within good proximity to the town centre, where there are appropriate amenities available.

“Given that the building has been disused for a number of years, it is desirable to bring the site back into use and avoid antisocial behaviour, improve the appearance of the property, and avoid it falling further into dis-repair.

“The proposed use is appropriate to the location.”

It goes on to note, “The development of a disused building will remove the potential for anti-social behaviours which are often linked with such premises, and as such will be of benefit to the surrounding community as the building is brought back into use.”

Its expected that Gwynedd Council’s planning department will consider the application over the coming weeks.
