Coronavirus has arrived in Newtown after one local man confirmed he is suffering with the disease.

David Lister first started experiencing symptoms on Tuesday night, and following the advice of the Government, self-diagnosed through the NHS Wales website.

A 46 year-old plasterer who does not smoke and has no underlying health conditions, he says the virus has still taken its toll, leaving him tired, groggy and short of breath.

"I've had it for a few days now", he said.

"It's been bouts of being really short of breath for a short time, then going back to feeling groggy, and a persistent cough.

"Just going downstairs for a cup of tea can leave you really short of breath

"My kids have got it too, but they aren't as badly affected. They've got it on their chest and they're coughing at night but apart from that they are still able to act like kids."

Mr Lister says he followed every piece of advice from the government and NHS about social distancing before the lockdown, and has remained at home since the lockdown.

He believes must have caught the virus before then.

"The last place I went before the lockdown was Tesco so I may have picked it up there", he said.

"I'm a plasterer and even in the days before the lockdown I was cancelling jobs, I've followed all the guidelines.

"But on Monday night I had a real dry throat and a cough, and drank lots of water. I knew the next morning that I had it because I had every symptom – although the fever only comes at night."

Because few people are being tested the likelihood is that the true figure for cases across Powys is higher than the statistics given out by Public Health Wales.

Mr Lister said he believes it is more widespread than reported.

"I'm guessing it's everywhere, and all around Newtown", he said.

"It's only three days in for me but I'm relaxed about it, hopefully it doesn't get worse.

"I've stopped watching the news because it's all about the death toll and that just makes you feel anxious. I'm just going to stay in bed, and rest up until it's gone."
