CONCERNS have been raised over safety on an ‘already dangerous road’.

The crossing near the Aldi supermarket in Buckley has been branded dangerous by the town Mayor after one of the main lights has been out since last August.

Cllr Arnold Woolley told the Leader that cars speed down the road anyway, but now they are unable to see pedestrians in the darker hours.

He said: “The Aldi as part of public benefit agreed to create a crossing. It’s a busy road and so a crossing was created with lights at either side.

“One of the lights has been out since last august. One of my ward members had a near miss and when they told me I tried to sort it out as soon as possible. But Streetscene can’t deal with it because it is down to Aldi, so I contacted staff at Aldi who said head office had to deal with it.

“Nothing happened over Christmas so I wrote again, until January I received response saying they will take a look at it. Absolutely nothing has happened, so I wrote again in February and since then we had another two near misses.”

Cllr Woolley said that the light has still not been fixed – near eight months on.

He added: “I received a letter in March saying the health and safety is of upmost importance, but it’s still not fixed. It’s a health and safety issue and they are doing nothing about it.

“I know of three near misses but what about the ones not reported to me? I’m getting a bit frustrated.

“Someone is going to get flattened on that crossing. It’s a dangerous road already. People disregard the speed limit and those who are waiting to cross, motorists will not give way, they just speed past.

“I urge people to cross that road with extreme care. Where is their concern for public safety? This is people’s lives we are talking about.”

A spokesman for Aldi said: “The safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us and we aim to resolve this issue as soon as we can. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and we will work with the local council to ensure this is resolved.”
