A WREXHAM convenience store has introduced a free home delivery scheme to help residents who are not able to get out for their shopping.

AMPM, in Brynteg, launched the scheme just over a week ago.

Alessandro Paletta, whose father Dino has run the shop for 15 years, told the Leader the scheme has seen a big uptake already.

"We couldn't believe it," he said. "I thought I'd be doing two or three deliveries a day but I have had to recruit a driver to help. "We have 20 delivery slots a day and we recommend people book at least 48 hours in advance.

"We're already booked up until Monday (April 6), but people can book a slot every week going forward.

"The minimum order is £10 and we have all of the daily essentials - groceries, toiletries, tinned food, bread, biscuits, household items, newspapers, fresh fruit and veg, meat and more."

Mr Paletta and driver John Santos, an optician, are both running the scheme on a voluntary basis.

Speaking of the response and demand from the community in the first week Alessandro, a trainee airline pilot, continued: "We've already done about a 150 in areas like Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Llay, Brymbo - there isn't anywhere in Wrexham we've not delivered to.

"I didn't realise how many people out there were not able to get what the need.

"Hopefully with this, they will be able to get their full shop.

"I've been touched by how much it has meant to people as well.

"They get quite emotional sometimes, because we're the only people they have seen in days in some cases.

"We'll continue serving the community until this crisis is over."

The shop is also offering free coffees for NHS employees and members of the military.
