THE PUBLIC has been called on to help keep a heritage railway running after the coronavirus has passed.

Llangollen Railway Trust launched an emergency appeal for funding after having to close earlier this month.

General manager Liz McGuinness said the railway, which is a registered charity, relies heavily on funds from visitors and event.

Not having those sources of income will mean a "substantial impact" on the charity's future, she explained.

"At this time of year we should be preparing for the coming season," she said.

"But as you are all aware, we are in the midst of a covid-19 outbreak which has meant Llangollen Railway has had to close.

"This is a very worrying time for everyone.

"Financially it is an extremely concerning time for the railway.

"Because we have no visitors it means we have no income.

"We still have costs to bear along with paying staff wages, even though we have the government initiative.

"There's no business interruption available, and the Government loans come at a high cost when they are available.

"I don't think we can meet these costs."

The charity has called on members of the public to donate where possible, or to buy shares.

Liz McGuinness continued: "We have launched an appeal hoping you'll be able to support Llangollen Railway, to ensure we're still here when all of this is over.

"I appreciate everyone is finding things difficult and looking after yourself and your family is of paramount importance.

"All I would ask is that if you have anything spare, you consider donating to our appeal.

"Please take care and keep well - I hope to welcome you all back to Llangollen Railway in much happier times."

According to the railway's site, the appeal has so far received donations of more than £4,000 from over 100 people.
