CLWYD South MP Simon Baynes has spoke of how he has adapted to fulfil his duties to his constituents while taking precautions against coronavirus.

The Leader reported last week how Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock both tested positive for the virus.

Mr Baynes said that since returning from Parliament last week he has had no symptoms, but has taken the process of social distancing "very seriously".

He explained: "I am currently self-isolating at home like many others in Clwyd South but this does not stop me doing my job as the MP, thanks to being able to communicate with constituents via the phone, email, social media and local newspapers like the Wrexham Leader.

"We have closed the constituency offices in Westminster and Ruabon and my staff are also working from home but, like me, they too are keeping in touch with constituents all day every day by phone, email and social media.

"Wherever possible, I ring constituents back after they have contacted me given that my role as MP is not only to answer people’s enquiries but also to provide moral support at this particularly difficult time.

"As a team, we are answering all enquiries within 24 hours as a speedy response is particularly important.

"The range of enquiries we receive is huge and we get to work immediately in trying to solve people’s problems.

"One of the advantages of being an MP is that we can usually get an answer very quickly on behalf of constituents from companies, organisations and key people.

"Every day I am struck by the amazing dedication of our public sector workers throughout this crisis, particularly in the health and social care sectors, and by the huge number of volunteers, businesses, shops, local organisations, charities, chapels and churches in Clwyd South who are helping out in a wide range of different ways. "A key part of the service we are providing to constituents is to put people in touch with these volunteers, not least through the Association of Voluntary Organisations Wrexham (AVOW), who then help out immediately.

"Please do not hesitate to contact me on simon.baynes.mp@parliament.uk or on 01978 269386 if my team and I can help you in any way."

Speaking of last week's developments, he said: "I would like to wish the Prime Minister all the very best and hope he will make a speedy recovery. "I understand from his comments that he will be self isolating and leading the fight against coronavirus from Number 10.

"I would also like to send my very best wishes to Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who has been tireless in his work during the coronavirus crisis."
