NORTH Wales Police officers are monitoring Anglesey's bridges closely to ensure that only "essential journeys" are being made by anyone travelling on them.

Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced strict new guidelines to help the country deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

Membes of the public have been asked to stay at home and only venture out if it is absolutely essential to do so.

As a result of this, officers have been stationed near both the Menai Suspension and Britannia Bridges over the course of the week to keep an eye on anyone who may be making non-essential journeys onto and out of Anglesey.

A spokesperson for NWP's Anglesey team said: "The team has been in Menai Bridge this morning and a vehicle is also mobile around the island.

"Please do not visit Anglesey over the weekend. This is an unusual and difficult message, however necessary.

"Officers may be on Menai Bridge, Britannia Bridge and the A55 to discourage unnecessary travel and you may be stopped and asked about your intentions on Anglesey. Official Covid19 restrictions are in force".

On Sunday, whilst carrying out some of these routine checks, the team stopped a car on the island which had no insurance, no MOT and no tax.
